What to expect From Therapy

Individual sessions

Individual sessions provide space for one person who experiences difficulties to address their concerns. Strategies can be discussed and practiced thereby reducing problematic symptoms.

Helen aims to provide support for individuals through building a workable professional relationship. Individuals experiencing considerable distress may require weekly sessions. Other clients may prefer sessions spaced such that they have time to integrate new concepts and practice strategies. Appointments are negotiated and can vary from fortnightly, monthly or every two or three months.

Couples therapy

When couples are experiencing difficulties in relating to each other they often attempt to distance themselves emotionally. Helen aims to create a space where both parties feel validated and are more willing to express themselves honestly. A purpose of couples’ therapy is to challenge perceptions, foster the discovery of entrenched patterns of interaction and increase awareness of ‘self’ and ‘other’.

Some couples experiencing considerable distress may require weekly sessions, whereas for other couples it may be prudent to have individual sessions initially to address intense emotions. Appointments are negotiated and can vary from fortnightly or monthly once couples are better able to resolve conflict themselves.

Family therapy

Family therapy aims to provide a safe space for family members to address conflicts, communication difficulties and concerns. Progress in family therapy may include individual sessions, couples sessions, sub-groups of family members and extended family members.

Helen aims to create an opportunity for the development of stronger and emotionally richer connections between individuals and thereby assist to build a stronger family unit. Each person attending will be asked about his or her perspective, goals and priorities. Family members may have differing needs to attend therapy. Appointments are negotiated and can vary from weekly, fortnightly or monthly.
